4 suicides in Lucknow in a day

Four persons, including a newly-married woman, committed suicide in the state capital on Saturday in separate incidents.
According to police reports, Ramdevi, 22, committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree in Mall area. In Nishatganj locality, a trader Ram Prasad, aged about 48, committed suicide by jumping before a running train. In another incident, Ravi Kumar Singh, a student, was found hanging in his room in Chaupatiyan locality. Dilip Dwivedi, 28, who was working as a medical representative, committed suicide by consuming poison in Thakurganj Nagariya.

Punjab gets child rights panel notice

July 9: The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights has directed Punjab’s chief secretary to explain an FIR registered against three minor boys, “illegal” arrest and alleged torture of one of the minors in custody at the behest of senior Akali leader and former Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee president Bibi Jagir Kaur.
NCPCR member secretary Lov Verma has ordered state chief secretary Subodh Agarwal to institute an investigation into the allegations and submit an ATR within the next ten working days. As per a complaint from the Bolath (Kapurthala) MLA Sukhpal Khaira (Congress), three boys from his constituency — Gurpreet (17) and Moti Sagar (17) and Sharanjit Singh (14) were booked on false charges at the Begowal police station.

Man held for hoax terror calls

July 9: The Ajmer police has arrested retired deputy tehsildar Subhas Trivedi for allegedly misleading the police by providing false information and making hoax calls about a terror threat in Ajmer and Pushkar.
According to the police, Trivedi sent a fax to the chief minister’s office on July 6 informing that two terrorists have entered Pushkar with explosives.
Trivedi, who runs a school in Kishangarh town of Ajmer, said that he was just checking the police’s preparedness in dealing with such a situation.

Gogoi assures security for hydro project

July 9: In what may come as major setback for anti-dam lobby, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Saturday announced that his government was committed to ensuring full safety and security to the ongoing 2000-MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Asserting that his government would ensure the movement of turbines to Gerukamukh, the project site, Mr Gogoi told reporters, “We cannot afford to allow such anti-development movements.”
