4 top Maoists killed in Assam
In what has confirmed the presence of the armed wing of the Maoists in Assam, security forces on Wednesday gunned down four top commanders of Maoist in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district. Security forces also recovered a cache of sophisticated weapons with huge quantity of ammunition and incriminating documents from the hideout.
Disclosing that a police constable Achinta Das was injured in the encounter, authoritative security sources told this newspaper that it was a major breakthrough on Maoist front as four top commanders of the outfit — Sidhartha Buragohain, Rajiv Gogoi, Arup Chetia and Kamala Buragohain were killed in the encounter.
Informing that Sidhartha Buragohain was the regional commander of Maoist armed wing in Assam, security sources said that security forces had launched operation following a tip off about the presence of a group of Maoists rebels at Deopani Borgora village under Sadiya police station.
Security sources said that three AK-47 rifles, three grenades and huge quantity of ammunitions were recovered. The security forces also recovered Maoist literature, demand notes and incriminating documents. Union home secretary R.K. Singh lauded the Assam police over the encounter. Mr Singh conceded the Maoists are trying to set up bases in Assam and said that this action would prove to be a setback for the ultras plans.
“I think it’s a very good work done by the Assam police. I would like to congratulate the DGP and his team,” he said.
