40,000 HIV cases in Krishna district
Vijayawada: Over 40,000 HIV positive cases are there in Krishna district and 35,000 people registered their names in various government hospitals. In addition 10,000 people approached the ART centres.
Addressing the advocacy meeting of officials at sub-collector’s office here on Wednesday, AP State AIDS Control Society project director C. Parthasa-rathy said the HIV cases among pregnant women was coming down. He said the HIV prevalence among pregnant women has gone down to less than one per cent in the state and in Krishna district it came down to 0.5 per cent. He stressed the need for a debate to end discrimination of HIV patients. He said that the AIDS Control Society has been implementing several programmes to create awareness among people on HIV, including adolescent education programme.
He said HIV testing centres were set up in 1,700 primary health centres in the state, including 34 in Krishna district. He said priority should be given to HIV affected people in rehabilitation program-mes through government welfare programmes.
However, AP tops with the presence of over five lakh HIV postive cases in the country. Of them, four lakh people registered their names. Krishna district stands in fourth place in the state as per the survey conducted during 2010. The National AIDS Control Society has taken up a fresh survey from this month over the prevalence of HIV cases in the country.
