4,300 MW more from new power projects
Chennai: The power starved Tamil Nadu would add 4300 MW to the grid through the commissioning of new power projects in the state by December 2014, according to latest tariff order issued by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC).
The Tangedco would add 1800 MW through its own projects in Mettur and North Chennai, the remaining 2500 MW would be its share from the central generation stations which are to be commissioned. Tangedco has submitted revised commissioning dates for the power projects to the TNERC.
The commissioning of the new power projects would help the corporation to bridge the demand supply gap of 4000 MW faced by the state. At present, the state’s power demand stands at 12,000 and the total installed capacity of conventional sources is 10515 MW including share from central generating stations is 3520 MW while the average availability is 8000 MW.
The 600 MW Mettur TPS stage III, which achieved full load in October last year, is expected to begin commercial operation only in September. “The generation in the new unit has been suspended on May 25 to replace the defective boiler burner which will be imported from China,” said a senior official.
The two 600 MW units of North Chennai TPS stage II is expected to be commissioned in July (Unit II) and August (Unit I). The Unit II, which touched full load in March this year, will come up first due to generator meant for the Unit I fell into a river while being brought a couple of years ago. “We are taking steps to synchronise the Unit I in the grid as well,” the official said. The second unit of the 3X500 MW Vallur TPS, a joint venture.
