5 cases against UP officials filed
The CBI, probing the NRHM scam, registered five cases against the Uttar Pradesh government officials and private contractors, including one against former family welfare minister of UP Babu Singh Kushwaha, alleging a loss of about `28 crores in implementing the Centrally-sponsored scheme meant for 72 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The agency will soon call them for questioning. The Allahabad high court had on December 15, 2011 directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the matter of execution and implementation of the NRHM scheme and utilisation of funds at various levels.
“Around three kg gold and `1.25 crores in cash, among some other important documents, were recovered during searches conducted at the residence of P.K. Jain, former general manager of Construction and Design Services (C and DS), a unit of Jal Nigam (UP), in Lucknow,” sources said. The agency is likely to book some officials of the state government under disproportionate assets (DA) case also.
Sources further said, "One case has been registered in respect of upgradation of 134 district hospitals for an amount of `13.4 crores by C and DS, a unit of UP Jal Nigam. Probe by the agency has revealed that the work was given to a Ghaziabad-based firm on the basis of forged documents."
Besides, four other cases have been registered in connection with alleged irregularities in awarding contracts in the procurement of medicine and medicinal equipment, expenditure incurred on printing of publicity material, hoardings and banners by unknown officials of directorate general (family welfare).
