5 chargesheeted for gangrape in Delhi
The Delhi police on Thursday filed a comprehensive chargesheet in a court here in the sensational gangrape-murder of a 23-year-old paramedical student, slapping charges of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, gangrape, robbery and others against five accused. In a bid to protect the victim’s identity, the police requested the court to issue directives that details of the FIR and chargesheet should not be made public. The police also sought in-camera proccedings so that these details are not revealed.
Those chargesheeted include prime accused Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh and associates Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta. The sixth accused was not chargesheeted as his exact age is yet to be determined. If he is not a minor, his name will be included in a supplementary chargesheet; but if he is underage, he will have to be tried under the Juvenile Justice Act, where the maximum sentence is three years’ jail. He is alleged to have raped the victim twice: details of this have been spelt out in the chargesheet.
The chargesheet was filed around 5.30 pm before the duty magistrate, half-an-hour after court working hours ended. When the magistrate enquired what led to the delay, public prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said investigators took time to put together the documents in an orderly manner.
