5 get death for ‘honour’ killing
A sessions court here on Friday awarded the death sentence to five members of a murdered girl’s family, saying the crimes were the “cold-blooded, brutal murders through electrocution” of their daughter and her lover Yogesh (20) in June 2010 for wanting to marry in defiance of their elders. The boy belonged to a Scheduled Caste.
Additional sessions judge Ramesh Kumar Singhal, while sentencing the five convicts, said for such crimes there is no other punishment except capital punishment. The killings took place at Swaroop Nagar in 2010. “Such cruel and barbaric acts cannot be allowed to take place in developed metropolitan cities,” he said. The court also fined them Rs 20,000 each.
The court, going by medical records, noted the victims were tortured by way of electrocution before being murdered. “The offence was not only inhuman and barbaric, but the savage nature of the crime has shocked the judicial conscience. In the case in hand, cold-blooded, brutal murders through electrocution have been committed even as there was no provocation on behalf of the victims, making it the rarest of rare cases which calls for no punishment other than capital punishment,” the court said.
Asha and Yogesh were murdered by Asha’s parents Suraj and Maya, along with her uncle Om Prakash, his wife Khushboo and Asha’s cousin Sanjeev.
