5 groups in state under scanner: PC
Union home minister P Chidambaram has said at least five groups having hardcore fundamentalist elements in them, who even run newspapers, are operating from the state.
Chidambaram was speaking to the media after a seminar on ‘Threats of terrorism: impact on development,’ organised by the Institute of Social Research and Action here on Wednesday. Even businessmen and industrialists were providing funds for these organisations, he said.
The home minister said these organisations were also involved in recruiting and training people for terrorist activities.
Many persons from the state had been arrested from other parts of the country for terror-related activities. Some such men from the state were in the list of absconders.
The absconders would be arrested shortly, he said.He said that most of the fundamentalist organisations operating from the state were “morphed” entities of banned organisations.
Terrorism did not have any religion. However, the terrorist organisations operate by propagating distorted versions of religions, he said.
Terrorist groups belonging to all religious groups were operating in the country. For example, some attacks held between 2001 and 2005 were believed to be the handiwork of a group belonging to a particular community.
But, later, it was found to have been masterminded by a group from another community, he said.
Union law minister Salaman Khurshid and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala attended the function.
‘Jundal proof of pak’s role in 26/11 attack’
Union home minister P Chidambaram said on Wednesday that the interrogation of Abu Jundal confirmed the view that there was “state support” for the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack.
The refrained from pointing fingers at any government organisation in Pakistan, though Jundal spoke of an ISI role.
India would track down every single mastermind and accomplice in the 26/11 attack and continue to exert pressure on Pakistan to hand over the culprits , he said.
