5 held for bar singer gangrape
Yet another woman was gangraped in the state — this time in Barasat. The 24-year-old woman, a bar singer, was allegedly gangraped by her landlord-cum-bandmaster and his four friends in drunken state during a late night party in Barasat of North 24 Parganas.
The victim was found lying on the premises of her neighbour’s house at Majherpara of Bamungachhi early on Tuesday. She was semi-naked, a local woman who spotted her at around 3 am after hearing her cries, said. She arranged for clothes for her and informed the police.
The victim was taken to Barasat State General Hospital where she underwent medical examination.
She was later taken to Barasat police station where she lodged a complaint and recorded her statement.
After questioning her, the police learnt that she lived as a tenant in the house of Debajyoti Kar Bhowmik. Debajyoti is a band-master at a bar on Taki Road in Barasat where the woman earned a living as a bar singer. On Monday night a party was organised in Debajyoti’s room.
The bar singer and her friend were also invited. The friend said, “Debajyoti and his friends are known to us and therefore, when they invited us we did not suspect anything. I left after 10 pm.”
Debajyoti, his four friends and the bar singer consumed liquor and dined together.
After the woman lost consciousness, the five allegedly gangraped her before dumping her at the next door compound, a senior district police officer said. “Based on her statement, we initated a case on gangrape charges,” he added.
Debajyoti, Tiyas, Rana, Bomkesh and Chhottu were arrested by the police and were remanded by the Barasat Court in three days’ police custody.
The increase in crimes against women in the state in general and in Barasat in particular is causing concern.
