50 critically hurt as train derails after Assam blast
Over 50 passengers were critically wounded in Assam Sunday even-ing when four coaches of the Guwahati-Puri Express derailed after a powerful explosion on the railway track between Rangia and Ghogharapar stations.
The explosion, triggered by a remote-controlled device around 8.45 pm, blew up a passenger coach which skidded into the water while three others got derailed. The train was bound for Puri, Orissa.
Security sources warned of casualties, pointing out that the blast had occurred in a very inaccessible location, and relief workers were still trying to reach the site.
Kamrup deputy commissioner S.K. Rai, who was on his way to the site, said there were reports of some casualties, but this was yet to be confirmed.
A few passengers travelling on the train told this newspaper on the phone from the site that a large number of passengers were wounded, but they had not been able to enter the derailed bogies as the entire place was in darkness.
