51-member group has lucky escape
Nellore: A group of 51 pilgrims from Nellore, which had gone on the Char Dham yatra, returned to the district on Sunday.
The group had a lucky escape because it had left Kedarnath almost 48 hours before the flash floods hit the shrine.
K. Ananda Rao, one of the pilgrims from Buchireddypalem, said the group was in Kedarnath on June 13 and 14 and had gone to Uttarakasi on June 15.
“The climate changed on June 15 and our bus was not allowed to proceed towards Haridwar. This was at the check-post in Dhonda, about 15 km from Uttarakasi. There was no lodging facility there. We managed to get shelter in Sishu Vihar, a school with two classrooms. The lodge, where we had stayed in Uttarakasi, was reduced to rubble after we left,” Rao said.
Another pilgrim B. Subba Rao said they survived on rice and other food stuff they were carrying with them. Although they were able to go forward on the third day, it took them 42 hours to cover 142 km to reach Haridwar from Dhonda due damaged roads and traffic jams.
