7 die, 59 INJURED AS DOON EXPRESS DERAILS in u.p.
Seven passengers were killed and more than 59 injured when the Doon Express (Howrah-Dehradun) derailed at Mehrawan station, in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district, on Thursday afternoon. According to official sources, nine coaches, including seven sleepers and two general, derailed. Coaches S6, S7, S8 and S9 overturned after the train derailed.
The driver said he saw some “distortion” in the railway track and applied the brakes. By then, 10 coaches, along with the engine, had safely passed over the “damaged” track but the seven coaches at the rear end derailed. Many passengers were said to be trapped in the overturned coaches.

CVC sends coal blocks case to CBI

The Central Vigilance Commission has referred to the CBI the case of alleged irregularities in utilisation of coal blocks by some private companies. The case has been referred to the CBI for preliminary enquiry, sources said.
According to sources, CBI officials held a meeting on Thursday during which the issue was discussed at length. CBI officials discussed all aspects of the reference received from the CVC, and also which branch should handle the probe, they said.
“It is believed that the specialised branch of the agency will probe the case. A final decision will be taken in a day or two. Agency officials will also consult officials of the Comptroller and Auditor General in this regard,” sources said.
Immediately after registering a PE, agency officials will also seek certain clarifications from the concerned ministry, sour-ces said. “Agency officials will probe the role of certain government officials also in this regard,” sources said.
