7 school kids, van driver die

Pudukottai: Seven school students and the driver of the milk van in which they were travelling were killed on the spot in a head on collision with a speeding private bus here on Wednesday while two students and the cleaner of the van were critically injured.

Hailing from Vijayaraghunathapuram village, Kaikurichi panchayat, school children had hitched a ride with the van to reach the government higher secondary school at Vallathirakottai on Pudukottai-Aranthangi road.

The accident happened about half a km away from school. The students who died are Sivakumar (17), Mathiazhagan (17), Vishnu (17) Sathya (17), Arunkumar (14), Manikandan (14), Narayanasamy (14) and Arumugam (32) the driver.

The police sent the bodies for a post-mortem and the injured were admitted to Pudukottai General Hospital. They were later referred to the government hospital in Tiruchy.
SP Uma, who visited the spot, mobilised the rescue operation.
