70-yr-old killed in house
Chennai: A 70-year-old woman was found murdered upstairs in a house in Mogappair in the city on Saturday while her aged husband was busy downstairs. Unidentified persons had strangled the woman and stolen 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the house in the morning.
Aged couple Umapathy, 75, and Parimalam, 70, were residing at Thirukural Munusamy street, Panneer Nagar, Mogappair West. While their son U. Suresh lives in London, daughter Suguna lives in Bengaluru and another daughter, Sumathi stays in Korattur.
While the couple stays on the first floor, Umapathy has a room on the ground floor. After having breakfast, Umapathy came to the ground floor and was doing some work from 9.30 am.
When he went up at 11.15 am, he found his wife lying lifeless in the bathroom. He called his tenant Dhanjoythi, who suspected that the old woman had been murdered. Immediately, they alerted the police. A police team rushed to the spot and conducted a preliminary enquiry. They established that Parimalam had been strangled to death.
As her head had also hit the bathroom wall, she had suffered injuries on the head. After committing the murder, the assailants escaped with 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery, including her gold thali. Thirumangalam AC, B. Kalitheerthan, said, “Persons known to the family may have entered the house and murdered her. We will arrest the assailants soon.”
The Nolambur police have registered a case and sent the body to the government hospital for post-mortem.
