8 parties send comments on caste census

At least eight political parties, including the Samajwadi Party and the DMK, have sent their comments to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on whether caste should be included in the ongoing Census. The views so far are reportedly both in favour and against inclusion of caste in the Census, sources said. While the BJP is expected to send the views on Friday, the Congress is likely to communicate its response on Monday, sources said.

A meeting of the GoM is expected to be held next week to take a view on the contentious issue. Mr Mukherjee, who heads the GoM had in July written letters to political parties seeking their views.
