80,000 CPMF to guard Delhi
Delhi turned into a security fortress as 80,000 Central paramilitary troopers and Delhi police personnel started preparations for the last leg of the Commonwealth Games - the closing ceremony, which will be held amidst unprecedented security cover at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium on Thursday evening.
Having pulled off an incident-free Games so far, the Delhi police is ensuring that the hard earned fruits of a successful Games don't turn sour on the last day of the Games and has thereby increased vigil by setting up more barricades and check points on different roads in central and southern zones of the city. "No stone will be left unturned and we will ensure that the signing off event of the CWG passes without a security scare," Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.
Delhi police commissioner Y.S. Dadwal on Wednesday reviewed the arrangements for the closing ceremony as well as the marathon event to be held at Connaught Place at a meeting attended by officials of MHA, organising committee, foreign delegations and CGF. Security concerns have caused the Delhi police to close most of the routes leading to JLN stadium as they will be made inaccessible for common people on Thursday.
"IAF choppers will survey the skies and snipers will be placed at rooftops and high rises to keep a hawk-eye vigil while a 5,000 strong force will surround the stadium," a senior Delhi police official explained. The Delhi traffic police has already announced traffic restrictions in and around CP.
