90-year-old sentenced to life in prison

A 90-year-old man, his wife and son were sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday for killing their female tenant three years back.

Additional Sessions Judge Sandeep Garg sentenced Lal Chand, his wife Omwati and his son Deepak to life in prison for killing their tenant Asha by setting her on fire in May, 2010 following regular conflicts with her over drinking water.

There was acute shortage of potable water in that area.

According to prosecution, Asha, a resident of Jharkhand, had been residing as a tenant in the house of Lal Chand at Ambala Cantonment. She had been working as a labourer in some factory. There were regular conflicts between them over drinking water.

Annoyed with Asha, Lal Chand and his family members planned to teach her a lesson. On May 31, 2010 they set her on fire after pouring kerosene over her.

Asha sustained serious burns and was shifted to PGIMER, Chandigarh where she succumbed to her injuries.
