Aamir appeals to Nitish to make generic medicines available
Actor Aamir Khan who is campaigning for use of generic medicines through his popular TV show Satyamev Jayate, has appealed to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to make them available in his state.
"I urge you to work towards bringing about this dynamic revolution of making generic medicines easily available across the state of Bihar," Khan said in a letter to the chief minister.
This would make a huge difference to the middle class, lower middle class and the poor, he said, as generic medicines were in no way different or inferior to branded medicine. He said Rs 35,000 crore in generic medicine manufactured in India were exported annually to other countries.
He was confident that the effort of the chief minister would help in making medication available to a huge percentage of the population.
The state government has adopted the policy of supplying generic medicines at its health centres. It procured Rs 132 cr in generic drugs last year for distribution in hospitals, state health department sources said.
