UP abolishes SC/ST quota in govt contracts
The Akhilesh Yadav government has decided to abolish reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in allotment of government contracts and has also fixed the norms for disbursement of unemployment allowance.
In the meeting of the state Cabinet here on Friday, the government has reverted to the tender procedure to ensure better pricing and better quality in construction works.
Reservation for dalits in allotment of contracts up to `5 lakhs had been started in the Mayawati regime in the state with a view to empowering dalit contractors.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government has fixed the age limit for unemployment allowance at 30 years. Unemployed persons above 30 years of age will be eligible for an allowance of `1,000 per month till they reach the age of 40.
The allowance will be paid to an estimated 9 lakh unemployed youth in three-monthly instalments and will cost the state exchequer `1,113 crore per annum.
The Cabinet has also set other conditions for eligibility for the unemployment allowance. These include an educational qualification of high school or equivalent examination and an affidavit that the person is not a beneficiary in any other government, semi-government or private scheme/job.
Persons who are domiciles of UP and whose collective family income does not exceed `36,000 per annum will be eligible for the unemployment allowance.
Those who have registered with employment exchanges up to March 15 will be beneficiaries of the scheme.
Besides, recipients of the unemployment allowance will also be required to do the work allotted to them from time to time, as the case may be.
