Activist saves three kids from lady goons’ torture
Railway police looked on as three kids were being tortured in public in the city on Monday night by two women who were alleged to have mafia links.
They were rescued by a social activist, Mr Murugan of Theruvoram who arrived after the call of a passerby with the help of city police.
It all started when two drunk women, allegedly mafia members, started beating up three small children at South Railway station. The children aged one, three and six were being tortured by the women in full public glare. However, no one, including railway police, tried to stop them.
Sivaprasad, a passenger, requested the railway police to rescue the children which was promptly turned down. The railway police told him that they wouldn’t take the risk since the women were members of a notorious mafia gang.
“Railway police on duty trivialised the issue saying such incidents are common”, Mr Sivaprasad told DC. Later, Sivaprasad phoned Murugan and upon his arrival they tried to rescue the children. The women who turned violent by then attacked them too. One of them bit Mr Murugan.
Murugan soon informed Ernakulam Women's Police Station. A police team later took the women into custody and the rescued children are with Murugan. The children would soon be produced before the District Child Welfare Committee.
Murugan can’t but lambast the apathetic attitude of the railway police. “If they can’t stop a crime happening in front of their eyes how would they guard the lives of lakhs of passengers? How women and children can safely travel in trains?”
Sources said action had been taken against 18 railway police personnel for failing to carry out their duty.
