Activists for amnesty to Chishty

Human right groups have made a fresh appeal to secure amnesty on humanitarian grounds for jailed Pakistani virologist Dr Khaleel Chishty in Ajmer while right wing Hindu activists also geared up to oppose such attempts. “We hope for the best, insallah sab theek hoga” Dr Chishty told local media while going for medical check up.

Dr Chishty has been serving a life sentence in Ajmer for his alleged involvement in the murder of a local resident Idris in 1992 while the former was to India to meet his ailing mother. The 78-year-old Pakistani Khaleel was born and brought up in Ajmer but later he had migrated to Karachi during the Partition.
The right groups pleaded that Dr Chishty was innocent and he should be granted pardon. The state government also recommended his case on the same lines when noted journalist Kuldeep Nayar appealed to chief minister Ashok Gehlot but his mercy petition did not get Raj Bhavan’s nod.
According to sources, governor Shivraj Patil raised several questions and asked about the unusual delay in trial.
