Hyderabad: Actor and Secunderabad MLA Jayasudha Kapoor’s husband Nitin Kapoor had a narrow escape when the car he was travelling in went up in flames in the midst of traffic on Tuesday evening. Kapoor spotted smoke emanating from the engine while he was on the Jubilee Hills road and got out of the car. He escaped unhurt. The vehicle, however, was completely destroyed. This is one of several incidents of vehicles catching fire in the city over the last few days. The most common cause has been a short-circuit in the engine.According to Jayasudha, her husband was travelling in their Maruti Swift in the evening and was passing through Jubilee Hills when the incident occurred. One of her staff members was also with him in the car. The cause of the fire has still not been ascertained.“I was travelling about 10 cars behind my husband, when suddenly there was fire coming from the engine. The car is gutted,” she said. She added that the car was about eight years old and in good condition. “It was being used by our younger son in Mumbai and we recently brought it here,” she said.Meanwhile, in Guntur, a private bus belonging to Sree Kaleswari Travels, caught fire. Fortunately all the 18 passengers escaped unhurt.Another such incident involving state horticulture minister R. Venkat Reddy occurred on the outskirts of the city on Sunday. There were no casualties. Most of these incidents were attributed to short-circuit in battery pins.Experts from JP Research, experienced in accident investigation, confirmed this. “We have come across a few such incidents where there is sudden fire from the engine, but it could probably be the battery,” Mudassar Patel, a researcher said.Short-circuit in batteries can generate a lot of heat, leading to a fire. Experts say the additional accessories installed in a vehicle by owners at unauthorised places can cause these type of mishaps.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
