Adult tiger shot dead in Assam
The Assam police on Tuesday shot dead an adult Royal Bengal tiger which has killed a women and mauled another sub-inspector who tried to capture the tiger Morigaon district’s Nagabandha.
According to wildlife officials, the big cat swam across Brahamaputra from Orang National Park of Udalguri district and strayed into populated area of Nagabandha. The tiger, which was spotted by villagers, killed a woman and started roaming from one place to other creating terror.
Sub-inspector Tilak Chandra Bora with a police team went to trap the tiger which pounced on him in a paddy field and injured him critically. In order to save the sub-inspector from tiger, the police fired at the big cat.
The tiger was roaming in the area for past few days and also killed a bull, but the wildlife authorities failed to take note of it.
The residents of the area said that after spotting the tiger they approached the local wildlife offcials, but their complaints were ignored. The local wildlife officials also failed to turn up on Tuesday morning after a woman was killed.
After the police intervened and subsequently killed the tiger, forest officials, veterinary experts rushed to the spot.
The activists from a prominent animal rights NGO Aranyaak have also started investigating the circumstances that led to killing of an adult tiger.
