Advani, Varun speak out in Rahul support
A day after his party criticised AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi for “indulging in theatrics” by sitting on a dharna in Greater Noida over farmers plight, BJP parliamentary party chairman L.K. Advani on Thursday came out in support of Mr Gandhi. “Whoever is supporting the cause of farmers is doing a good deed,” Mr Advani said. Even BJP’s Pilibhit MP and Mr Gandhi’s cousin Varun Gandhi said no politics should be seen in AICC general secretary’s dharna.
Appreciating the AICC general secretary for taking up farmers cause, Mr Advani said anyone supporting the farmers cause is doing good for them. But contrary to his views, BJP said it should be probed how Mr Gandhi was allowed to meet villagers when others were being stopped by the state administration to even enter the area. BJP alleged that BSP and Congress were “hand in gloves”. It also criticised both the Congress-led UPA at the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government for the land acquisition problem faced by farmers.
Maintaining that no politics should be seen into Mr Gandhi’s dharna as it was a fight of farmers, Varun Gandhi said all political parties, excluding the BSP, have extended their support to the farmers who are demanding more compensation from the state government for their acquired land.
Mr Advani, however, attacked Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati for detaining his party colleagues, who were sitting on a dharna in support of farmers. The party alleged that Uttar Pradesh was being run under a “dictatorship”.
