AG incharge, SG replaced
New Delhi, Nov. 19: The Centre on Friday said it authorised the Attorney-General, Mr G.E. Vahanvati, to appear for the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in the Supreme Court in the 2G Spectrum case in place of the Solicitor-General, Mr Gopal Subramanium.
The replacement will ensure that the Prime Minister was “properly represented”, the Centre said.
In last two hearings, the SC had posed certain sharp questions on the alleged “silence” and “16 months delay” by the PM in responding to an application of the Janata Party president and former Union minister, Mr Subramanian Swamy, for sanction to launch the prosecution against Mr A. Raja.
Sources said the decision was taken after a meeting of the law minister, Mr Veerappa Moily, with the PM, who sought his opinion whether the Centre could engage an eminent lawyer.
