Agencies to probe projects ‘delinked’ from CWG
The Central probe agencies have also started probing the reasons for the de-linking of certain major projects worth several hundred crores of rupees from the list of Commonwealth Games projects by the authorities concerned.
According to sources, the Central agencies have started collecting documents of all projects, which were de-linked from the CWG projects. The agencies are also expected to probe the circumstances under which the projects were de-linked, sources added.
“The mega projects, which were de-linked, include Shastri Park tunnel corridor for connecting east Delhi to north and northeast Delhi, project related to connecting of Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg to the Games village and the Indira Gandhi indoor stadium, elevated east-west corridor from east Delhi to CP area for connecting the Games village to the IG stadium velodrome & Yamuna Sports Complex, Masoodpur corridor improvement and Mahipalpur tunnel project, Right turn signal free junction at Josep Broz Tito Marg and Siri Fort Road for Sports Complex”, sources said. Besides, improvement of the SP Mukherjee Marg corridor for decongestion of traffic near the Old Delhi railway station was also de-linked. This too is being probed by the agency, sources added.
“The SP Mukherjee project for removing decongestion was even approved by the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) technical committee back in March 2005”, sources said. Now the agency is probing the reasons which ultimately forced authorities to de-link the project from the CWG, sources added.
Besides the Central agencies — the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI —have also started collecting tender documents related to opening and closing ceremonies, including light show, held during the Games following complaints of large scale irregularities in awarding the contracts worth `493 crore. The CBI is likely to register a preliminary enquiry in this regard very soon, sources added.
“Agencies are also probing the suspected role of some members of the Commonwealth Games Federation in finalising the contract documents for these shows”, sources said.
Sources in the agencies maintained that the allegation of dilution of terms in the tender documents at the time of signing of these agreements is also part of the probe.
Meanwhile, it is believed that CBI’s request of sending “Letters Rogatory” (LR) for questioning UK-based Ashish Patel and getting financial details about his two London based firms for providing logistical support for the Queens Baton Relay of the CWG allegedly at exorbitant rates, has been accepted by the ministry concerned.
The agency’s request has now been sent to Legal and Treaty Division of the ministry of external affairs, sources said, adding that by next week, the LR would be routed through diplomatic channel to the UK.
