Agent hangs self, depositor takes poison
The tragic consequences of the chit fund groups’ massive fallout continue as an agent committed suicide, while a depositor attempted suicide after consuming pesticide. Ujjal Samaddar, an agent of Burdwan Sunnmarg reportedly hanged himself on late Sunday evening at Harishpur in Basirhat. It was reported that Samaddar had collected an amount of `25,000,00 from depositors in Basirhat of North 24-Parganas and had promised to pay them back by May 13.
However, seeing their money not getting repaid in time, depositors humiliated Samaddar and threatened to snatch his car if he fails to refund their investment. Unable to bear the insult, Samaddar hanged himself. He was taken to Basirhat sub-divisional hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
In a similar incident, 16-year-old and a Class 10 student Shahnoor Islam tried to commit suicide by consuming pesticide in Lataguri of Jalpaiguri district after failing to locate the agent who had duped him.
Shahnoor had worked as a security guard at Lataguri rail station for the past two years and had invested the hard-earned `75,000 in the Saradha Group that recently went out of business. The collapse of the chit fund company and the hiding of the agent had prompted him to try and commit suicide, his father said. Luckily, Shahnoor survived the incident and is recovering at Jalpaiguri sub-divisional hospital. According to his father, his condition is now stable.
Meanwhile, the investigators of the Saradha scam have prepared a 90-page status report of the probe and have sent it to the state home department on Monday. Sources revealed that the report contained the progress of the probe, interrogation and revelations of the arrested accused and their associates, seizure of the chit-fund company’s assets and properties and steps taken till date.
Police sources hinted that the Mamata Banerjee government would submit the report to the Calcutta high court on Tuesday in its bid to oppose the CBI probe.
The HC is likely to give its ruling into a PIL demanding a CBI probe.
