Agitators use clever ruse to get near nuclear plant
The protest march and siege planned by the anti-KKNPP agitators on Sunday caught the security personnel unawares as the activists changed their plan at the last minute and reached the backyard of the plant along the seashore.
Around 4,000 agitators made children take the lead, followed by women and men. Intelligence reports said the procession would reach the Koodankulam nuclear plant through Vijayapathy village.
Hence, security was beefed up near the plant, and roads leading to it from Idinthakarai through Vijayapathy and Vairavikinaru villages were completely closed. However, the agitators marched towards the plant along the seashore.
The protesters were stopped just 500 metres from the plant by CRPF and RAF, who were later joined by the Tamil Nadu special police. They then sat on the shore, shouting slogans and refused to heed Tirunelveli collector and the police superintendent’s placatory plea to stay put for five days.
