Agony of Tamil minority in Lanka: Film reaches out to students

Aimed at making the student community in Tamil Nadu sensitive to the agony of the Tamil minority in the island nation, the production team of Uchithanai Muharnthaal — a film that poignantly portrays the sufferings of a 13-year-old Lankan Tamil girl at the hands of the Lankan army, is organising special promotion programmes in Chennai and Madurai.

Slated for re-release in the state on February 3, the dance shows to be organised by producer-director Pugazhenthi Thangaraj’s Global Media Invest AS with the backing of Gemini Film Circuit would run as a precursor to the movie that encountered hiccups for obvious reasons when it hit the screens over a month ago.

This time around, Thangaraj and his team are not ready to take any chances. “To promote the film among the students, we have organised shows wherein Jodi no. 1-fame Prem Gopal who has danced for the hit song Iruppaai Thamizha Neruppaai (Be like fire, Tamils) in the movie will shake a leg along with the students on the stage too,” says Thangaraj.

Poet Kasi Ananthan who has written the lyrics and T.Iman who gave the music score and sung the song as well will explain to the participants what made the song tick before interacting with them. “It is an answer to the Kolaveri song. The programmes will prove that the young Tamil audience are even more receptive to songs with good and strong messages and will tap their feet and do a jig for them too,” Thangaraj says.

Forms will be distributed to participating students on the occasion asking them to pen down their reactions to Kasi Anandan’s ‘lyrical query’ on Sri Lanka’s genocide of Tamils – En pillaiyai mannil puthaipaargal; aval thaai mannai engae puthaipaargal (They will bury my child in sand but where will they bury her mother land?). A panel of political party leaders Vaiko, T.Pandian and Seeman will choose the best 3 answers.

The winners will get an opportunity to participate in the 50th day celebrations of the movie to be held in London. Thangaraj says, the movie is running successfully in Europe and Canada and has crossed 40 days. A European film company, according to him, has come forward to do the dubbing and release it in Norway. Members of All India Students Federation, the CPI’s students’ wing, are distributing pamphlets.

to the college students announcing the conduct of the shows which will be staged at Balamandir German Hall at T.Nagar in Chennai on January 27 and Victoria Edward Hall in Madurai on January 29.
