AIADMK demands Prime Minister, Chidambaram reply on 2G

The AIADMK executive committee, which met Saturday evening under the chairmanship of party chief J. Jayalalithaa, asked the Prime Minister, home minister and Congress president to reply to former Union communications minister A. Raja’s statements that Dr Manmohan Singh and Mr P. Chidambaram 'knew' about the 2G spectrum allocation.

“The entire nation expects a reply from the Prime Minister and home minister when such serious charges are being made by former DMK minister Raja involving the Prime Minister and home minister. UPA chairperson (Sonia Gandhi) should give a statement on this. The people of the nation have a right to expect a reply from the government,” Jayalalithaa later told reporters while briefing them about the resolutions.

“The executive insists that in deference to people’s views, the PM, the home minister and the Congress president should immediately reply to Raja’s char-ges,” the resolution said.

The meet, attended by party treasurer and finance minister O. Panneerselvam and others, also asked the Centre to immediately stop the passenger ferry to Colombo from Thoothukudi.

“The service, which was stopped in 1983, was resumed recently against the feelings of the Tamils and, hence, it should be stopped,” said another resolution.

Another resolution insisted that the Centre allot additional power from the Central pool to the state, roll back the prices of diesel, LPG and kerosene and allocate sufficient fertilisers for TN.

Yet another resolution urged the Union government to prevent Kerala from constructing a new dam at Mullaiperiyar.

The meeting also sought a ban on cotton exports to protect the domestic textile industry and to withdraw the Prevention of Comm-unal and Targeted Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) Bill, 2011.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
