AICC to ask Sonia to pick CWC, polls look unlikely
The current mood within the Congress is against the holding of any elections to the Congress Working Committee.
Party delegates coming to New Delhi for the one-day All-India Congress Comm-ittee meeting here on Tuesday, November 2, are likely to demand that Congress president Sonia Gandhi be formally authorised to nominate members to the Central Working Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body.
With just 48 hours to go for the All-India Congress Committee meeting, there is no sign of interest in party circles in holding of elections to the 12-member Central Working Comm-ittee, with no senior leader trying to show his or her strength or popularity through elections. In earlier years, those who had shown such signs were aspirants for the prime ministership or at least in the party president’s post.
The late Chandra Shekhar, Rajesh Pilot and Jitendra Prasada had been in this category, while among current leaders senior figures such as Arjun Singh and N.D. Tiwari have not given up hope — even though they are not very active in politics due to their advancing years.
