Aircel-Maxis deal: CBI to meet Maran

The CBI officials, probing alleged violations regarding spectrum allocation between 2001 and 2007, are likely to meet former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran to seek his clarification over certain issues related to alleged Aircel-Maxis deal in the first week of July.

According to sources the agency has already initiated its investigation into the preliminary enquiry (PE) registered to probe criminal aspects, if any, in the allotment of spectrum licences since 2001. Scrutinising documents related to the allotment of telecom licence to Aircel during Maran tenure is part of the probe under the PE, sources added.
“The agency is now planning to seek clarification of Mr Maran over certain issues related to alleged Aircel-Maxis deal, which had taken place in 2006. The agency officials may meet Mr Maran in the first week of July in this regard,” sources added. The agency will register a case only after seeking clarification from all those who are under the scanner, including Dayanidhi Maran, sources added.
The CBI officials will also visit department of telecommunications (DoT) to collect certain documents related to spectrum allocation from the Telecom Commission, decision-making body of the DoT, next week.
“The agency has also recorded the statement of former Aircel chief C. Sivasankaran in this connection. It is being scrutinised by the of CBI as well as officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED)”, sources said.
Former telecom minister Arun Shourie, who held the charge between 2003-04, has already been quizzed by the CBI in detail about the allocation of spectrum licences during his tenure. The agency has registered a preliminary enquiry against “unknown persons” on Supreme Court’s directive to detect any alleged anomaly in ‘first-come-first-served’ of Cabinet during spectrum allocation between 2001-07.
Meanwhile, the CBI on Tuesday questioned a top representative of a telecom company in connection with 2G Spectrum scam case. The agency is preparing to file second supplementary chargesheet in the 2G case by the end of this month.
