Alagiri finally breaks LS silence
Finally, Union minister for chemicals and fertilisers M.K. Alagiri spoke in the Lok Sabha during Question Hour on Thursday. The son of DMK supremo M.K. Karunanidhi had been scrupulously avoiding Question Hour whenever his ministry’s questions were listed for replies ever since he became Union minister last year.
Reason? His inability to speak fluently either in Hindi or English, the two languages in which he was allowed to respond to questions as per precedence.
On Thursday he broke his silence by uttering the sentence, “Question number 161”. The reply to this question, as also the supplementaries, were was given by his deputy, Mr Srikant Jena.
Mr Alagiri’s presence and uttering of a few words did not go unnoticed by Mr Charan Das Mahant who had asked Question No. 161.
“I am fortunate to have my question listed as the first question of the day and perhaps it is also the first time the minister is replying to a question,” he said.
