Alagiri has to pay for code violation

Having found DMK leader and Union minister M.K.Alagiri guilty of violating the model code of conduct, the Election Commission has directed him to reimburse the government money that may have been spent when he undertook a visit to Madurai while on an official trip to Chennai.
Finding his response to the notice sent to him for violating the model code of conduct unsatisfactory, the EC has directed to him to not only reimburse the expenses incurred on the non-official leg of his visit but also warned him to be more cautious in future.
The EC has said it has “decided to take a lenient view in the matter” given that Mr Alagiri has said that he’s a first-time MP and so was not aware of the nitty-gritty’s of procedure. Mr Alagiri, son of DMK supremo M. Karunanidhi, holds the chemicals and fertilisers portfolio at the Centre. Mr Alagiri left for Chennai on an official visit to review the functioning of CIEPET after the assembly poll dates have been announced.

AIADMK’s allies strike hard bargain

March 19: The Poes Garden bungalow of Jayalalithaa had lights on all through Friday night until dawn, when the last batch of fatigued seat-negotiators, the Marxists, crawled out disheveled and red-eyed, holding their bag of 12 seats. ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth’s DMDK delegates had left a couple of hours earlier, telling the host they would be back in the morning for repairing the alliance that cracked when the AIADMK supremo announced her list of 160 constituencies even as talks were on with the allies. Saturday was no better as Amma’s lieutenants O. Panneerselvam, K. A. Sengottaiyan and Pollachi Jayaraman resumed talks with the DMDK and the MDMK. The CPI was luckier as its state secretary D. Pandian and comrades left the place fairly Friday night with the list of their 10 seats.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
