Alcohol claimed lives of 155 women in 2011

Over 150 women were among 4,547 people who died last year in the country due to consumption of alcohol, according to government data.

Maharashtra topped the list of deaths, detailed in the Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2011 report prepared by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), with 1,185 victims followed by Haryana (309).

A total of 155 women died in the country due to alcohol consumption last year with Karnataka on top with 36 women followed by Chhattisgarh (31), Tamil Nadu (19), Maharashtra (18), Madhya Pradesh (15) and Andhra Pradesh (10).

Such deathd were was also reported from Uttar Pradesh (7), Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jharkhand (three each), and Odisha, Uttarakhand and West Bengal (one each).

There were a total of 23 deaths, including that of two women, due to alcohol consumption in Gujarat where prohibition is enforced.

In the national capital, there were 151 deaths due to alcohol last year compared to 125 in 2010.

Though no woman was among the victims last year in Delhi, one woman died in 2010. Last year's figure is less than that of 2010 when a total of 4,886 deaths due to alcohol consumption occurred, out of which 144 were women.

The report also noted that 881 women died during abortion or child birth last year as against 785 in 2010. In this head also, Maharashtra topped the list with 345 such cases followed by Madhya Pradesh (195).

In the national capital, 30 women died during abortion or child birth.
