Alemaos armtwist to get their way
A Goa Congress minister and his brother on Tuesday withdrew their resignations, saying that the party had assured tickets for their kin for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state.
Churchill Alemao and his brother Joaquim had tendered resignations from the state Cabinet last week as they were upset over disqualification of Churchill’s daughter Valanka from the Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (GPYCC) elections.
Both the ministers were summoned to Delhi by the high command to persuade them from withdrawing their resignations.
Back from Delhi, Churchill said they have decided to withdraw their resignations after meeting the high command. “The high command has assured a ticket to Valanka and Yuri (Joaquim’s son) during the forthcoming elections,” Churchill told reporters in Panaji.
The elections for Goa Assembly are scheduled next year.
The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) has demanded that the elections be held in February or March, almost four months before schedule. Valanka is seen as a candidate from Benaulim constituency, while Yuri has been canvassing from Sanguem constituency.
