Alert in Assam as MHA fears spread of Maoists
The home ministry has asked Assam and other north-eastern states to intensify vigil on activities of Left wing insurgent group, following the reports of a Maoist’s central committee member visiting Assam.
The visit of central committee member, which coincided with Maoist module Aditya Bora jumping the bail, has been seen as a major setback for the security agencies, which failed to confine Bora in judicial custody.
Admitting that the judiciary was not sensitive to Maoist menace, security sources said that it was not the only Aditya Bora in Assam but a member of CPI(Maoist) politburo member Malla Raji Reddy also jumped the bail in Andhra Pradesh. Aditya Bora was arrested in February 2011 in Orissa.
Disclosing that Maoist leaders are also suspected to have been establishing contact with illegal arms dealer of Dimapur in Nagaland, security sources said that the most alarming development, which security agencies have noticed very recently, is the availability of European arms, in addition to Chinese weapons at Dimapur.
Informing that arms made in Italy and Germany are also available in Dimapur, the emerging hub of illegal arms trade in the country, security sources said that they are yet to ascertain the route through which these arms are smuggled from European countries to Burma and Nagaland.
Sources said elusive Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah sees them as potential buyers of illegal arms.
