UP: Allegations flow from Gomti river
UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said on Friday that the manner in which the previous BSP government had tampered with the flow of the Gomti river in Lucknow, one should not be surprised if his own official bungalow at 5, Kalidas Marg, got flooded too.
“The entire Haider canal that emptied into the Gomti has been blocked with concrete and stones and in event of heavy rains, there is bound to be a heavy backflow that will flood residential areas including my own bungalow. We have started a hydrological study of the river and will shortly start work upstream to redeem the situation as far as possible. The previous government has done heavy stone work downstream and has caused maximum damage to the river,” he said through an intervention in the question hour. Parliamentary affairs and urban development minister Mohd Azam Khan said that the Haider canal had been turned into a drain and it will take some time to undo the damage.
The question posed by BJP MLA Laxmikant Bajpai related to the narrowing of the Gomti river bed following construction of parks and memorials in the BSP regime but soon flowed towards political allegations.
The Leader of Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya accused the BJP of betraying lord Ram, demolishing the Babri mosque and said that those who had betrayed the lord could not be expected to be loyal to the people. “We will not allow the BJP to mislead the people on such issues. Ms Mayawati has turned the area into a tourist spot whereas people could not stand there due to the stench emanating from the river,” he said.
