Ally ‘thanks’ AIADMK for increasing hours of power cut

The power scenario in Tamil Nadu is so bad that even allies of the ruling AIADMK have started cornering the government. The Tiruchy unit of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) has stuck posters across the city there, sarcastically hitting out at the AIADMK regime for the recent spurt in duration of power outage.

The poster, copy of which was uploaded in Facebook says; “Thanks to the state government for gladdening the people by increasing the power outage duration from four hours of the previous DMK regime to six hours now.” The poster also carries a pictorial representation of a group of school children struggling to read using a lantern.

However, MMK leader professor Jawahirullah dismissed the poster as an act engaged in by few overenthusiastic cadres and said they have not launched any offensive against the AIADMK on the power issue.

Rubbishing arguments that commissioning of Koodankulam nuclear power plant could help TN tide over the acute power deficit, Jawaharilluah said the existing Kalpakkam plant only produces up to 40 per cent of its capacity and even if the first reactor of KKNPP generates up to 70 per cent, TN would not get more than 350MW after considering transmission loss among other deterrents.

Reasoning that the only way to maneuver the acute power deficit would be by desilting and increasing storage capacity of Hydel projects, Jawahirullah pointed out that the capacity could be enhanced by 2,500 MW, which would be more than sufficient to overcome the acute deficit and rescue the state from gloom.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
