Anna now political crusader
Anna Hazare is emerging as a crusader against the Congress but is seen soft about the BJP and its state governments on the issue of corruption. On Tuesday, he announced he would campaign against the Congress candidate in the Hisar Lok Sabha bypolls scheduled for October 13.
Union law minister Salman Khurshid, meanwhile, said in New Delhi that the government would bring the anti-corruption bill in Parliament’s Winter Session. Reacting to Mr Hazare’s plan to campaign against the Congress, Mr Khurshid said he was not going to comment on anybody’s views. “It is their decision. Every citizen is free to vote for anybody. Congress will only do its work, perform its duties, and Congress will then go back to the people when the duty is performed. Let the people judge. We have said that in the next session we are bringing not just this one bill (Lokpal) but many other bills as well,” he said.
Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi termed Mr Hazare’s decision as “unfortunate” while reiterating that the government is committed to set up a strong and effective Lokpal and Mr Hazare should not have any “pre-conceived notions”. He said Mr Hazare should have faith in the “collective wisdom” of the nati-on, which is represented by Parliament. Mr Dwiv-edi said the Congress “trusts” Mr Hazare when he says he does not have any personal political ambition, and that is why “he should not allow the issue raised by him with good intentions to be misused for political reasons”.
