Another woman delivers on road
A pregnant woman on Thursday gave birth to a baby girl on the road after being denied admission by a state-run hospital.
Parbati Bagdi of Mangalkot visited Burdwan Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday evening seeking admission for delivery of her baby but the hospital authorities allegedly told her to come back after a month.
She spent the night at the hospital and on Thursday morning again told the doctor that she was experiencing labour pain but she again received the same reply. Disappointed, she boarded a bus for Mangalkot. However, only a few minutes later, her pain became unbearable and co-passengers helped her to get down from the bus. Near a tea stall, she gave birth to her baby under the open sky with the help of local villagers who also brought a quack doctor. He severed the umbilical cord and cleaned the baby. Both mother and new-born were in good health. The villagers raised some money, booked an auto-rickshaw and sent her home.
On January 13 also, a woman had given birth to twins on the road in Kolkata after being denied admission in a city hospital. The woman later died after giving birth to twins. She was denied admission allegedly by two government-run hospitals despite having a government health card.
