Antony: Indigenous production rising

The Centre is taking several initiatives to promote indigenous production of defence equipment but still has “a long way to go,’’ defence minister A.K. Antony informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. However, the defence minister pointed out that as a result of the initiatives by the government, the level of indigenous production of defence

equipment has increased. “In the past, only 30 per cent of defence equipment was produced indigenously. However, now this figure has gone up to 40 to 50 per cent. In fact, every year we are improving on our level of indigenous production. Gradually, we are improving,’’ Mr Antony said.
A new category of “Buy and Make(Indian)” has been included in the Defence Procurement Procure (DPP) in order to encourage participation of Indian industry,’’ Mr Antony said during Question Hour.
To a question whether most of the weapons and equipment of the Indian armed forces have become outdated, Mr Antony said the MiG 21 and MiG 27 series of fighter aircrafts will be phased out.
