AP BJP warns of statewide stirs over power tariff hike
Demanding a roll-back of the recent power tariff hike by the Congress-led government, BJP Andhra Pradesh unit has decided to organise agitations across the state from April 16.
Condemning the state government's decision to hike the power tariff from this April, BJP national secretary Dr K Laxman on Tuesday said that as part of the agitations, the party would lay siege to Vidyuta Souda, headquarter of the state electricity department on April 16.
"If the government failed to withdraw increased power tariff, BJP would launch agitations in a phased manner across the state," Laxman said.
Terming as 'astonishing' Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy's claim that his government has extended additional subsidy of Rs 175 crore "to insulate people from any extra burden", Laxman said that through the power tariff hike, the government has put a burden of Rs 4,442 crore on people.
The BJP leader criticised the Congress saying the party has violated its 2009 election manifesto, in which, it had promised that power tariff would not be hiked for five years. "People would teach a lesson to the ruling party in the coming by-polls as well as in the 2014 general elections," he said.
