AP to force Naidu to give up fast?
The state government is contemplating forcibly ending Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s fast which entered the sixth day on Wednesday as his health deteriorated further after he refused to be administered intravenous (IV) fluids.
Though doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) tried to forcibly administer IV fluids, Mr Naidu remained steadfast and asserting he would give up his fast only after getting a firm assurance from the government on the 20-point demand including reimbursement of `10,000 to `15,000 per acre for crop loss to farmers, TDP leaders said.
At one stage, Mr Naidu asked everyone to leave his room barring his wife, Ms Bhuvaneshwari, son Mr Lokesh, and his attendant and locked the door from inside, causing some anxious moments.
Sources said that the government asked Nims doctors to take all steps to administer IV fluids and other life-saving drugs to Mr Naidu by Wednesday night, if required forcibly, to save his life. He might also be shifted to ICU. A weak Mr Naidu was advised by doctors, family members and party leaders to give up his fast lest he went into a coma but Mr Naidu refused.
The TDP, meanwhile, along with other allies including the CPI and CPI(M), has decided to block all highways on Thursday in protest against the government’s attitude towards farmers. The party appealed to people to avoid long-distance travel. The decision was taken after a meeting of the TDP politburo here on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s statement in Mahbubnagar asking Mr Naidu to give up his fast evoked sharp response from the TDP.
