AP govt, opposition war over Nehru's 'Telangana plan', water
Hyderabad: Opposition parties like Telugu Desam, TRS, CPI and others today criticised the Andhra Pradesh government in the legislative council over the Telangana and other issues even as the ruling Congress members defended the government.
Hitting out at the Congress, CPI MLC P. Nageswara Rao alleged that the ruling party had fought the 2004 elections with a party (TRS) that is born to fight for state Telangana but is now dilly-dallying on the issue.
"Have (UPA government) they at least said we are at it?," he asked, speaking on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address to the joint sitting of the legislature.
Pointing out that differences have grown among people on regional lines, he said the Centre should take a decision on the issue without delay.
Alleging that the verdict of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal caused great loss to the state, he said the government should take effective measures to protect the state's interests.
TRS member N. Lakshmana Rao said Telangana people are now fighting for self-respect and self-rule. However, Congress and TDP members took exception to certain comments made by Lakshmana Rao quoting Jawaharlal Nehru. Maintaining that Nehru favoured dividing Andhra Pradesh as and when Telangana or non-Telangana regions wanted, he quoted a speech reportedly made by Nehru.
However, stating that Nehru never made any such remarks, Congress member R. Padma Raju, state minister Kanna Lakshminarayana, TDP's Dadi Veerabhadra Rao wanted the remarks to be withdrawn or expunged.
Deputy Chairman Mohd Jani said the remarks would be expunged. CPI(M) member Sitaramulu said the crucial issues like alleged corruption have not found mention in the Governor's address.
The government has not appointed chairmen for the SC and ST commission for the last two years, he alleged.
TDP member Masala Padmaja alleged that Governor's speech is full of half truths and contrary to ground reality.
Agreeing that the state is passing through difficult times, Congress MLC K Durgesh asserted that the government is committed to take the state on the path of progress despite challenges like agitations, natural calamities among others.
The recent 'Rachabanda' (village junction) programme of the state government was a success and it instilled confidence in the minds of people that the legacy of late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on the welfare scheme would continue, Durgesh said.
