AP woman delivers at Chennai airport, baby dies
Australia-bound Nethalamunny Shyamasundari, 36, of Rajahmundry gave birth to a child at Chennai Airport at 1 am Thursday. But the premature baby died after two hours.
Eyewitnesses said Ms Nethalamunny, who was to board a Malaysian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur, looked pale and tired as she checked in. Counter staff directed her to a clinic at the airport.
The six-and-a-half-month pregnant passenger entered the clinic at around 11.15 pm Wednesday complaining of severe abdominal pain. “She was suffering from urinary tract infection and looked very uncomfortable.
The doctor advised her not to travel but rest and later take blood, urine and ultrasound tests,” said sources.
A doctor administered her IV fluid as she was dehydrated. She went to the restroom to relieve herself and delivered there.
The baby fell in an inverted position in the toilet closet. A nurse immediately picked the boy up and the umbilical cord was cut and clamped.
“As the baby was not crying, the doctor started first-aid, including intubation, oral airway suction and high-flow oxygen supply,” the sources said.
But the baby, who weighed 600 gram and had a pulse rate of 40, died after two hours at 3 am after cardio pulmonary resuscitation failed. The woman, whose placenta did not come out, has been transferred to a private hospital.
Trip to join husband turns tragic
Nethalamunny Shyamasundari was keen to join her husband in Australia but the day ended in tragedy.
The 36-year-old native of Rajahmundry in East Godavari district who holds an overseas citizen of India passport, was to travel by a Malaysian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur on her way to Australia.
However, she gave birth to a child at Chennai airport at 1 am on Thursday who died after two hours.
The woman, who went to the private clinic at the airport at 11.15 pm on Wednesday kept urging attendants to check on the flight that was to leave the city at 00.30 hours on Thursday, said eyewitnesses.
The woman was in her second trimester (about six-and-a-half-months pregnant) and was asked by her gynaecologist to take antibiotics for urinary tract infection but had failed to do so.
“When she reached the clinic, she was in discomfort and had abdominal pain. She also passed maconium stained fluid,” sources said.
“When she entered the restroom to relieve herself, she began pushing the baby and while she was getting up from the toilet closet, the baby fell in an inverted position into the closet,” the sources said.
After two hours and several attempts to save the baby, the boy died.
The mother, whose placenta did not come out because of sudden pregnancy, was moved to the city hospital, where she was operated on and is said to be recuperating in the labour ward.
It was Shyamasundari’s first child and she had conceived it through in-vitro fertilisation.
A nurse informed Deccan Chronicle that the mother was keen on the well being of the child and kept asking about him when the baby was under treatment.
