Arjun may talk of Warren in House
Congress veteran Arjun Singh is said to have made up his mind to put the record straight during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on the controversy over the “escape” of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson. The Monsoon Session commences July 26.
“How can Arjun Singhji remain silent if this issue will be discussed in the two Houses of Parliament, especially in the Rajya Sabha,” Congress insiders asked.
According to them, Mr Singh, a sitting Rajya Sabha member, will have to break his silence if the Opposition targets the then Central government headed by Rajiv Gandhi on Mr Anderson’s release.
But the role of the Madhya Pradesh government, headed by Mr Arjun Singh at the time of the Bhopal gas leak tragedy in December 1984, and of the Centre then would certainly be discussed in Parliament if a discussion on this issue is allowed during the month-long session.
A section of the Congress viewed privately that the former CEO of Union Carbide did not leave India without the “knowledge” of the Centre.
The Madhya Pradesh government might have helped Mr Anderson reach New Delhi, but later, different agencies must have played a role. Mr Arjun Singh had said some time ago that he would clear the air.
