Army Chief makes maiden visit to J&K

The Army Chief Gen. Bikram Singh, who is on a two-day visit of Jammu and Kashmir, his first after assuming the charge, had detailed discussions on the security situation in the sensitive border state with senior Army officials at the headquarters of the Northern Command at Udhampur, 230-km south of here, on Friday.
He also closeted with senior commanders of the Srinagar-based 16 (Chinar) Corps at its headquarters here to discuss similar issues and later called on governor N.N. Vohra at Raj Bhavan here. An official spokesperson said, “During their more than an hour long meeting, the governor and Chief of the Army Staff discussed various matters relating to internal and external security situation. Other issues having a bearing on security management were also reviewed.”
Defence sources said that General Singh was briefed by NC chief Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik on important issues particularly the efforts underway to check and discourage the infiltration from across the Line of Control which include placing in use high technology, sensors and night vision devices together with the human resources by effective deployment of the troops.
“The Army Chief had a detailed interaction with Lt. Gen. Parnaik,” a NC spokesperson said.
He added, “The Army Chief was apprised of the current security situation and the operational preparedness in Northern Command, as well as the complex dynamics of the proxy war situation in J&K.” Gen. Singh, who is being accompanied by Ms Bubbles Singh, president, Family Welfare Organisa-tion, later during the day arrived here and was briefed on the security situation in the hinterland and along the LoC by chief of 16 (Chinar) Corps Lt. Gen. Om Prakash in Badamibagh Cantonment here.
