Army destroys old shells, explosives near Delhi
The Indian Army is in the midst of an operation to destroy grenades, artillery shells, rockets and other explosive material that are part of metal scrap at the Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Tughlakabad in the Capital.
The operation is being carried out at the request of the Delhi government.
The metal scrap found its way into the country in the past few years from war-torn areas like Iraq and Afghanistan.
It was to find its way to steel factories but was confiscated by the authorities since it was dangerous and was then kept at the ICD. The Army is transporting these explosive munitions from the ICD to the Tilpat range in Haryana’s Faridabad district and destroying it there every day.
Of about 3,500 munitions, the Army has already destroyed about 2,000 munitions in the operation which began on May 11.
Remote-operated vehicles and bomb suits are being used by the 201 Bomb Disposal Company which operates under the Indian Army’s Western Command.
