Army specialists to man jammers at CWG venues
In view of the terror alert issued by Stratfor, a US-based think tank, the government has roped in army specialists to operate jammers and signal decryption equipment at Commonwealth Games venues.
These precautions are aimed at preventing terrorists from triggering explosions by remote-control.
Over 1,000 personnel from specialised units of the Army have been inducted for securing venues and communication channels during the Games. They are expected to be in place by September 15, seventeen days ahead of the sporting extravaganza.
Sources said the army deployments had been held up by discussions on the Army's demand that its soldiers and officers deployed for the Games should get paid.
A solution has now been finalised between Union home ministry, Urban development ministry and the defence ministry under which the Games Organising Committee will make special arrangements to house the Armymen near Palam from September 15 to October 20.
Earlier this month, the Urban development ministry had asked the defence minister, Mr
A.K. Antony, to ensure that the Army does not charge the Organising Committee for the soldiers and officers deputed for Games duties.
The sporting event is scheduled to held from October 3 to 14 here.
Sources said that Army personnel may also be put on security duties at vital installations and hotels and the Games Village, where foreign delegates and participants would be staying.
Over 70 countries are likely to participate in the sporting event. Delhi Police and central security agencies are trying to ensure fool-proof security for the event, being hosted by the country for the first time.
According to Stratfor, Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and other militant outfits may target Delhi while the Games are on.
